Types of Student Visas in the U.S.

There are two primary types of student visas for individuals who wish to study in the United States:

1. F-1 Visa: Academic Students

The F-1 visa is the most common type of student visa for individuals enrolled in academic programs at U.S. schools, colleges, or universities. The F-1 visa is intended for students pursuing full-time studies at accredited institutions, including:

  • Universities and colleges
  • High schools
  • Private elementary schools
  • Seminaries
  • Conservatories
  • Language training programs

F-1 visa holders must be enrolled in a full-time academic program and maintain their student status throughout their stay in the U.S.

  • Eligibility: To qualify for an F-1 visa, the student must have been accepted by a SEVP-approved school and demonstrate sufficient financial support to cover tuition and living expenses during their studies. The student must also prove that they intend to return to their home country after completing their studies.
  • Duration: F-1 visa holders may remain in the U.S. for the duration of their studies, as indicated on their Form I-20, plus an additional 60 days to prepare for departure or pursue further education.

2. M-1 Visa: Vocational Students

The M-1 visa is designed for students enrolled in vocational or non-academic programs at U.S. institutions. This visa is typically for students pursuing hands-on training in fields such as:

  • Technical training
  • Mechanical studies
  • Cooking schools
  • Cosmetology

M-1 students must be enrolled in a full-time vocational program and demonstrate the same financial and intent-to-return requirements as F-1 students.

  • Eligibility: Like the F-1 visa, M-1 visa applicants must be accepted by a SEVP-approved vocational institution.
  • Duration: M-1 students may stay in the U.S. for the duration of their program, as specified on their Form I-20, plus 30 days to prepare for departure.

Maintaining Your Student Visa Status

Once you have arrived in the U.S. and begun your studies, it is essential to maintain your student visa status throughout your stay. F-1 and M-1 visa holders must adhere to specific rules to avoid falling out of status, which could result in visa revocation or deportation.

To maintain your student visa status, you must:

  • Enroll in a Full-Time Program: You must be enrolled as a full-time student during each academic term. Failing to maintain full-time enrollment can result in losing your student visa status.
  • Do Not Work Without Authorization: F-1 students are allowed to work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week during the school year and full-time during breaks. Off-campus work is generally not permitted without authorization from USCIS.
  • Notify Your School of Changes: If there are any changes to your program, personal information, or address, you must notify your school’s Designated School Official (DSO) immediately.
  • Follow Travel Rules: If you plan to travel outside the U.S. during your studies, you must obtain permission from your DSO and ensure that your visa and travel documents are in order to reenter the U.S.

At Thomas DeMarco & Associates, we understand the importance of pursuing educational opportunities in the U.S., and we are committed to helping international students achieve their academic and career goals.
